Osama Bin Laden...silence helped nab terrorist! Lack of technology a red flag!

As the top news story of the past decade (the death of terrorist Osama Bin Laden) - unfolds in breathtaking detail around the globe - one niggling fact remains.

It was not good old American know-how (or military mite) necessarily - that felled the notorious terrorist who graced the FBI's "Most Wanted" list for nine years or so - but rather - a smidgen of common sense!

According to sources at the White House, the intelligence community zeroed in on the Al Qaeda upstart leader months ago, because of basic stupidity on the part of one of Osama's couriers.

For example, it is being reported that investigators at the CIA and the JSOC became suspicious when it came to their attention that none of the residents at the highly-secured compound outside of the Capitol of Pakistan were in possession of any common technological devices - such as cell phones, Internet connections, cable hook-ups, and what-have-you - normally utilized by regular citizens in the daily course of their routine.

In a nutshell?

The silence was golden!

A tip-off to agents!

Once that curious observation was made, the authorities proceeded to take a closer look from a secure perch - at which point - they noticed that things didn't sit right with the mysterious tenants who inhabited the compound.

For example, the residents were spied burning their rubbish, instead of casually tossing it out like their neighbours did.

The fact that the suspects were painstakingly destroying their garbage sent up a red flag!

At that juncture, agents determined by way of vigorous 24-hour surveillance, that one floor of the facility was inhabited by a tall man who bore a striking resemblance to Osama Bin Laden.

Osama's height probably did him in, for starters!

Notwithstanding - one has to wonder - did Bin Laden get sloppy on the heels of his falling stature in the eyes of the Muslim world in recent years?

Could be!

Apparently, the al Qaeda leader suffered a noticeable decline in popularity in recent days.

For example, a Pew poll conducted a month ago in six Muslim countries determined that Bin Laden's popularity dropped since a similar survey was conducted back in 2003.

Only 34 percent of Muslims in the Palestinian territories polled expressed confidence in Osama's ability to be an effective representative of their political, social, and religious views.

In contrast, the fugitive soared to world prominence in the Arab world with an approval rating of 72 percent, right after the 911 attack on the Twin Towers in New York a decade ago.

The biggest drops in support were reflected in polls that were taken in Indonesia and Jordan.

However, the al Qaeda leader's popularity remained strong with radical Islamists for one basic reason.

This rag-tag band of hard-nosed Muslims backed and supported Osama for vigilantly warring against the much-hated Western world.

Now that Osama Bin Laden has met his demise, who will the lone wolves turn to now?
